VISK 6 - Nation-wide programme of digital presentation of rare documents - Memoriae Mundi Series Bohemica

Memoriae Mundi Series Bohemica is a programme devoted to digital presentation and protection of the cultural heritage contained in documents preserved in the Czech Republic. Launched by the National Library of the Czech Republic in co-operation with the Prague-based company Albertina icome in 1995, the programme has from the very outset espoused the UNESCO project called Memory of the World. Subsequently, several pilot projects were implemented, including the first CD-ROM of the whole project and the first published digitised manuscript.

Developed for Memoriae Mundi Series Bohemica, the Czech data format DOBM was accepted by the UNESCO as an internationally recommended format for publications within the Memory of the World project. This world-wide programme is based on experience jointly gathered in the field of digitisation by both the founding institutions since 1992. In fact, the programme was incorporated into the activities pursued by G7-countries within the Bibliotheca Universalis project. Notably, its results as to application of new data formats were appreciated by the laboratories of the U.S. company AT & T. Moreover, the implementation of the digitisation programme is instrumental in bolstering the fundamental activities of the ongoing 5th general programme of the European Union, namely, in terms of digital protection and presentation of the cultural heritage. Cf.: http://www.memoria.cz/ ).

In September 2002, the database of the documents digitised by the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague (Klementinum) contained 539 records of documents from the collections of the National Library (396 records) and other selected libraries and archives. The other institutions include: Premonstratensian Monastery of Strahov (20 records), Moravian Regional Library in Brno (19 records), State Research Library in Olomouc (19 records), National Museum Library in Prague (18 records), Museum of eastern Bohemia in Hradec Kralove (9 records), State District Archive in Jihlava (7 records), National Technological Library (4 records), Museum of Klatovy (3 records), Museum of Mlada Boleslav (2 records), Archive of the town of Brno, Literary Archive of the Museum of National Literature in Prague, State District Archive in Louny, Museum of Olomouc (1 record), and Kynzvart Castle (63 records). Currently, the digitised documents can be seen on CD-R, with the process of their Internet presentation already begun (cf.: http://www.cdh.nkp.cz/ ).

The Digital Library of Kynzvart Castle Top

In virtue to its unique collections, Kynzvart Castle ranks among the most significant European historic monuments. It was reopened after 24 years in 2000, with the comprehensive rehabilitation of the site being considerably co-funded by the European Union within its cross-border co-operation PHARE programme. Since the rehabilitation included opening the castle library to professional users, appropriately equipped facilities for interested scholars were built up in 1999. The castle, including its library, is owned by the Czech Republic and administered by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage in Pilsen.

The Kynzvart library of the Austrian State Chancellor Clemens W. Lothar von Metternich-Winneburg und Beilstein contains more than 12.000 titles in 24.000 volumes. Among 160 manuscripts there is, for example, a rare fragment of the Mosaic Law dating back to the late 8th century. 230 incunabula in 145 volumes represent one of the largest collections of incunabula throughout the Czech Republic.

Within the framework of the VISK 6 project, 64 titles (in 63 volumes) were digitised in 2001, with the number of manuscript pages totalling 20.202. This first stage included almost all Kynzvart manuscripts spanning the period between the late 8th century and the early 16th century; for instance, the oldest manuscript of Czech and Moravian libraries - the unique late 8th-century fragment of the Old Testament, as well as various rare codices - Ordo de festivitatibus monasterii Fructuariensis from the first half of the 12th century, Liber consuetudinum regularium from the second half of the 12th century, Aecorti descriptio locorum sanctorum et belli sacri from the second half of the 12th century, Legendae vitae ac passiones sanctorum - two convolutes dating back to the second half of the 12th century and dealing with the lives of various saints, the psalter Psalterium ad usum cotidianum disposum from the second half of the 13th century (with lavishly adorned initial letters), a part of an allegedly French Old Testament from the 14th century, the well-known late 14th-century collection of legends by Jacob de Voragine, two abundantly illuminated volumes of Histoire de France from the late 14th century, Liber carmanum bucolicorum from the early 15th century, the 15th-century statutes of the Benedictine Order, the 16th-century Chronicle of Magdeburg etc.

In 2002, another 35 titles were digitized. The essence of the selected manuscripts (19 titles and 5.440 pages) is constituted by the collection of amazing works by Karl Huss, the last executioner of the town of Cheb and the first custodian of the museum of Kynzvart Castle. His treatises deal with the local history and geography of the Cheb region; in particular, his four-volume Chronicle of the town of Cheb (Kronik wie sich von anfang der stadt Eger und ferneren aufnahme ungefehr zugetragen,…) dating back to the late 18th century, Die noch sehenbaren denkmäler des alterthums in der stadt Eger, Wappen- und güther-verzeichniss der stadt Eger und dessen bezirks etc. Very interesting is the collection of coats-of-arms of various aristocratic families, mostly from the Cheb region. The digitisation of the above manuscripts will be highly appreciated by domestic and foreign scholars, since the advanced presentation and utilisation of the information value of Karl Huss' manuscripts can undoubtedly and crucially bolster the regional historiography. The selected incunabula and old prints (16 titles - 4.800 pages) can be described as a prelude to the book collection predominantly coming from the secularised Benedictine monastery at Ochsenhausen in Swabia (Germany) whose domain fell to the father of Chancellor Metternich. Before selling the domain to the House of Württemberg, the Chancellor ordered to select the most precious titles for his Kynzvart collection.

Within the project's second stage, the complete bibliographic inventory of the Chancellor's castle library was made, encompassing 23.786 items, i. e. 12.146 titles in 22.783 volumes. The digital library of Kynzvart Castle is presented on the Internet.

    The Digitisation Workplace Top

Run by the AiP Beroun company within the Memoriae Mundi Series Bohemica programme, the Digitisation Workplace of the National Library of the Czech Republic is equipped with state-of-the-art appliances. In terms of quality, its digital images can be compared with studio-made photographs. Moreover, the applied technology safeguards careful treatment of the books.

The facility is divided into three workstations:

The oldest of them is equipped with a KODAK DCS460 RGB wheel camera (resolution: of ca. 2000 x 3000 points, i. e. approximately 250 dpi for an A4-sized original). This station is enhanced with a system enabling white-colour calibration and computerised "flash-dosing".

Established in 1998, the second workstation is equipped with a BetterLight 6000 camera scanner (resolution of 6000 x 8000 points, i. e. approximately 680 dpi for an A4-sized original). This mobile workplace is enhanced with permanent cold illumination and UV/IR-protection.

The third and most recent workstation was put into operation in 2001. The conceptually advanced CRUSE special Bookscanner CS145 B220 equipment has the following features: perfect image quality, sophisticated software, extraordinarily exact laser-supported calibration, individual ICC profiles for all varieties of illumination. The camera's resolution of 7500 x 10000 points corresponds to 450 dpi for an A2-sized document or 225 dpi for an A0-sized document. This workstation enables scanning the books irrespective of their size or weight up to the size of A0, as well as studio illumination of exceptional documents (for instance, golden illuminations). The applied safe and cold illumination safeguards double IR/UV-protection.

Customarily, the digitisation proceeds as follows:

    1. Preparation of optimum illumination and calibration of the workplace
    2. Recording of reference tables GretagMecbeth and HEXACHROM
    3. Recording of the document
    4. Adjustments to the fundamental digital image, colour calibration, individual ICC profile
    5. Making of another sets of images for the users' various quality levels
    6. Merging the images with the prepared description data into an electronic document
    7. Completeness control
    8. Making of the ordered number of CD-R copies
    9. Assignment of a booklet with a reference table (extraordinary long-life reference calibration table is added as a booklet to CD-Rs containing images of particularly significant documents)
    10. CD-R quality control, including a protocol summarising the test results
    11. The above procedure results in a completely processed digital document

The outcome of the digitisation process does not only include the image files, but also a great deal of other additional information. Apart from calibration tables and ICC profiles necessary to enable genuine colour reproduction in the future, they also entail bibliographic descriptions, associated texts and appropriate user's interface. The resulting data files are stored in the SGML and XML form which is unattached by the current computers' hardware and software.
